Mountain Bike Advocacy: Let your voice be heard! Attend CVNP’s February Open House.

Advocacy Cuyahoga Valley National Park has announced three dates for the first public input session for the new Trail Management Plan (TMP) and Environmental Impact Study (EIS).  The dates are Thursday, February 11th from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm and Saturday, February 13th 10:00 am-noon.  CAMBA strongly encourages all mountain bikers to attend!

CAMBA strongly encourages all mountain bikers to attend:

This is the perfect time to let your voice be heard.  We strongly encourage all interested trail users, including mountain bikers, to understand the process and get involved in a creative and productive manner.  The park wants to hear your IDEAS.  What’s most important are what the park refers to as “substantive comments”.  That means that you tell the park not only that you want trails for off-road cycling, but WHY you want trails for off-road cycling.  For example, maybe you think there are a lot of health benefits or maybe you think it makes the region a better place to live.   Think creatively and don’t be afraid to express your opinion!

Background

The TMP and EIS are the first part of a federal process needed for the park to consider new uses such as mountain biking and represent a significant first step towards our goal of creating a world class trail system in northeast Ohio that includes off-road cycling.

The park is currently operating from its1985 Trail Master Plan.  The park recognized that it and its users have evolved and there are new challenges and opportunities that the park faces.  To address this, the TMP and EIS processes have been initiated. The processes are transparent and provide for ample public input.

Purpose of the open house

The purpose of the public input sessions is to collect input on various issues. Examples of this would be:

1) How can the trail network be improved or enhanced to provide opportunities for         a wide variety of users?
2) How can the trail network’s condition, operation and stewardship be enhanced?
3) How should the trail be improved or enhanced to minimize resource impacts?

Preliminary issues have already been identified based on CVNP park partners, CVNP Staff and Initial Stakeholders.  Some of these issues include:

1) How to Expand and Improve Trail Network (including mountain biking).
2) How to Optimize Visitor Facilities
3) How to Sustain and Expand Trail Stewardship

Meeting format:

The meeting will start with a slide slow on the plan process, initial issues and objectives. Participants will then be invited to share ideas about the identified issues through the use of issue boards around the room (write your ideas on the board).  There will no public speaking; all comments will be written on the issue boards.

What has already been done?

CAMBA has already submitted its Stakeholder Survey Response and met with CVNP staff to discuss the ideas presented in the survey.  Click here to read CAMBA’s stakeholder response.

All meetings will be held at...

Think about it...

Rule of the Trail #2: Leave No Trace.  Practice low-impact cycling. Wet and muddy trails are more vulnerable to damage. When the trailbed is soft, consider other riding options. Stay on existing trails and don't create new ones.
